Carefully read the case study below and answer the question that follows.
Abbvie Pharmaceutical
Eshe Buthelezi
Dayo Ngwenya
"The purpose behind the job evaluation system is to ensure equity, alignment, and fairness in
pay rates at Abbvie Pharmaceutical," explains Eshe Buthelezi.
"I understand all of that, Ms. Buthelezi," protests Dayo, "but Naledi is the best chemist in the
country. We now have an opportunity to get her to work for us."
Ms. Buthelezi speaks rmly: "Look, Dayo, the grade for chemists is Grade C; only managers
from Grade D upwards receive a company car. Can you imagine what would happen if Naledi
were given this benet? The other chemists will demand cars as well. You were part of the
job evaluation panel; you concurred with the evaluation; now you want the job to be pushed to
Grade D. I have a major problem with that—I do not want the system to be manipulated."
Dayo, however, remains determined: "Employing Naledi would be in the interest of the
business, Ms. Buthelezi. We cannot afford to lose a resource of that caliber. There must be a
way that we can get around this problem," she insists.
However, Ms. Buthelezi disagrees: "I'm sorry, I do not know of any way. If you can think of
one, tell me, but I doubt you will."
If Naledi is appointed at a Grade D level, despite chemists being classied under Grade C, identify the that would
arise and indicate how Abbvie Pharmaceutical could effectively address it.
Select one:
Green-cirle: Bring the pay rates in line with the normal pay range as soon as possible.
Pay compression: Increase the salaries of other pharmacists to restore internal equity.
Pay overlap: Adjust the grading structure to accommodate Naledi's appointment.
Red-circling: Limit Naledi’s salary until it falls back inside the updated range of the pharmacist position.
