, ENG2611 Assignment 1 (COMPLETE
ANSWERS) 2025 - DUE 16 April 2025
Questions 1. We need to know that reading does
not always follow the same process as reading
functional writing, such as information boards, is
different from reading fiction for pleasure (TUT501
2020: 9) 1.1 In view of the statement provided
above, explain how pre- and post-reading
techniques enhance critical reading? Your answer
should be in a paragraph of 150 words. (4 marks)
Pre-reading and post-reading techniques are essential in
developing critical reading skills. Pre-reading involves preparing
the reader’s mind by previewing the text, asking questions, and
making predictions, which activates prior knowledge and sets a
purpose for reading. This enhances comprehension by creating a
mental framework. Post-reading, on the other hand, involves
reflection, summarisation, and questioning to evaluate and
synthesise the information gained. These strategies help readers to
interpret the text more deeply, assess the author’s intentions and
credibility, and form their own opinions. Together, these
techniques ensure that reading becomes an active, thoughtful
process rather than passive absorption. They encourage the reader
to engage with the text before, during, and after reading,
ultimately enhancing understanding and critical engagement.
1.2 In your own words, explaining the difference
between pre-reading and post-reading strategies.
(2 marks)
Pre-reading strategies prepare the reader for the text by activating
background knowledge, setting goals, and predicting content. Post-
reading strategies involve reviewing, summarising, and evaluating
the content to ensure understanding and draw conclusions.
2. Our ability to read and appreciate literature often
comes from the approach to reading in our homes,
irrespective of our home language, because an
appreciation for reading is not limited by language
or culture (TUT501 2020: 13) 2.1 In line with the
perspective outlined in the statement above, as a
Foundation Phase FAL teacher, how will you apply
reading strategies to learners who are not exposed
to reading, and why? (5 marks) ENG2611/01/2025
