Assignment 1

Due date: [16 April 2025]

Read Study Units 1 and 2 in your Study Guide (Tutorial Letter 501) before you
attempt this assignment. It is important that you complete the activities in these
Study Units to establish a sound understanding of what critical reading is and
how reading skills can be used for critical writing. You also need to refer to the
relevant sections of your prescribed textbooks for more insight.

Questions

1. We need to know that reading does not always follow the same process as reading
functional writing, such as information boards, is different from reading fiction for
pleasure (TUT501 2020: 9)

1.1 In view of the statement provided above, explain how pre- and post-reading
techniques enhance critical reading? Your answer should be in a paragraph of 150
words.

Critical reading skills develop through pre-reading and post-reading strategies
because these methods allow learners to understand the text with active and
directional mindset. Before starting to read students should engage in three key
techniques to predict, ask questions and activate their current knowledge in order to
bring context and expectations into the text while fostering curiosity and establishing
reading purpose. The process of skimreading headings along with discussions about
essential vocabulary enables readers to understand text contents better. According
to post-reading approaches, summarising and analysis combined with discussion
enhance readers' ability to think critically. Through such methods readers can assess
the material's content along with establishing personal connections to form valid final
interpretations. Reading becomes an active reflective process when readers use pre-
and post-reading strategies that make it less passive especially when students need
to understand and analyze academic material.
