QUESTION 1
1.1 What is meant by the expression “Global North and Global South”?
The terms Global North and Global South are not strictly geographical; rather, they
reflect the socio-economic and political divide between wealthy, industrialised nations and
poorer, developing countries. The Global North generally refers to economically
developed countries like the United States, Canada, Western Europe, and parts of East
Asia such as Japan and South Korea. These nations often have strong economies,
advanced technology, and dominant positions in global decision-making. On the other
hand, the Global South encompasses much of Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle
East — regions that were historically colonised and continue to face the lasting effects of
colonialism, such as economic dependence, inequality, and underrepresentation in global
knowledge production.
