1.1 Brainstorming as a Problem-Solving Technique
Brainstorming is a creative problem-solving technique designed to generate a wide
range of ideas from individuals or groups in a free-thinking environment. It is commonly
used in business, education, and research to develop innovative solutions. According
to Anggraini (2020), brainstorming aims to generate a large number of ideas within a
limited time, encouraging open discussion without immediate criticism. Antoniadou
and Antoniadis (2024) emphasize that the process fosters creativity by allowing
participants to share unconventional ideas that may lead to effective solutions. The
goal is to explore multiple possibilities before narrowing down to the best solution. The
core principle of brainstorming is to encourage free thinking and creativity, where all
ideas are welcomed and recorded without initial criticism or evaluation. Brainstorming
is used to stimulate creativity by encouraging all participants to share ideas regardless
of how unconventional they may seem. The process has several key rules: (1) there
should be no criticism or evaluation during the idea-generation phase, (2) quantity is
emphasized over quality initially, (3) participants are encouraged to build upon each
other’s ideas, and (4) all ideas are recorded for later evaluation. This method is
particularly effective in overcoming mental blocks and generating innovative solutions
in a collaborative environment. According to Antoniadou and Antoniadis (2024) the
goal is to generate a diverse range of potential solutions to a problem. Later, these
ideas can be reviewed, analysed, and refined to identify the most promising solutions
(Gandrita, 2023).
Key Features of Brainstorming
1. Encourages Creativity – Participants are free to express ideas without
judgment.
2. Group Participation – Team members build on each other’s suggestions to
improve creativity.
3. Quantity Over Quality Initially – More ideas are encouraged before
evaluation.
