Question 1: Cohesive Devices in the Text
Cohesion in a text is achieved through various cohesive devices that link ideas,
ensuring clarity and flow. Three cohesive devices found in the article are reference,
conjunctions, and lexical cohesion.
Firstly, reference is used when the author employs pronouns and determiners to refer
to previously mentioned information. For instance, in the phrase "These are the
expected changes," the word "these" refers back to the preceding discussion on petrol
and diesel price reductions. This device ensures that the text does not repeat the same
information unnecessarily but maintains continuity.
Secondly, conjunctions such as "however," "meanwhile," and "similarly" are used to
establish logical relationships between sentences. The sentence "However, this is still
well below the trading prices seen in August" contrasts the increase in oil prices with
prior months, helping the reader understand the comparison. Similarly, "Meanwhile, the
rand has a more volatile week" shifts focus while maintaining the flow of discussion.
Lastly, lexical cohesion is achieved through the repetition of key terms such as "petrol
prices," "oil market," and "rand," which reinforce the central themes of the article. The
recurrence of words like "decrease," "recovery," and "over-recovery" highlights the
topic's focus on fuel price reductions. This consistent use of vocabulary enhances the
coherence of the text.
