Corporate Entrepreneurship
Question 1: Entrepreneurial Intensity at Dell
Entrepreneurial intensity refers to the degree and frequency of entrepreneurial activities
within an organization. It is measured by the levels of innovation, proactiveness, and
risk-taking in a business. Dell demonstrates high entrepreneurial intensity through
various practices:
Innovation: Dell pioneered direct marketing in the computer industry, allowing
customers to configure their systems before purchasing.
Proactiveness: The company was among the first to implement an integrated
supply chain, linking customer orders directly to suppliers.
Risk-taking: Dell reduced its supplier base to 40 key partners, taking the risk of
relying on fewer suppliers but benefiting from closer collaborations and efficiency.
Question 2: Four Flexible Rules for Adaptation and Innovation
To remain adaptive and innovative, organizations must adhere to four flexible rules:
1. Encourage Experimentation – Dell empowers its employees through team-
based Business Process Improvement programs, fostering innovation and
efficiency.
2. Keep the Structure Flexible – Dell maintains an agile and streamlined supply
chain, ensuring responsiveness to market demands.
