, BLG1501 Assignment 2 (COMPLETE ANSWERS)
Semester 1 2025 (225234) - DUE 11 April 2025
Question 1 [20]
1.1 Write explanatory notes on the greenhouse effect. (7)
1.2 Distinguish between hypertonic, hypotonic, and (6)
isotonic solutions.
1.3 Explain how edges and corridors can strongly influence
landscape biodiversity. (7)
Question 1 (20 Marks)
1.1 Explanatory Notes on the Greenhouse
Effect (7 Marks)
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that
warms the Earth's surface. It occurs when the
Earth's atmosphere traps solar radiation due to
the presence of greenhouse gases, such as
carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous
oxide (N₂O), and water vapor (H₂O). These
gases allow sunlight to enter but prevent some
of the heat from escaping back into space.
Step 1: The Sun emits shortwave radiation,
which passes through the Earth's atmosphere
and reaches the surface.
