ASSIGNMENT 2
SEMESTER 1
2025

2.1 Factors That Hinder the Growth of Sea Water Transport

Sea water transport is important for global tourism and trade, but its
growth is slowed down by several challenges. The following factors
explain why sea water transport does not develop as fast as it could.

1. Lack of Infrastructure

Some destinations do not have enough accommodation options and
tourist attractions for visitors who travel by cruise ships. This affects
tourists who want to stay for a few days before continuing their journey.

Without proper hotels, restaurants, and activities, tourists may not find
the destination appealing, which can reduce the number of cruise ships
visiting the area (International Transport Forum, 2016).

2. Lack of Public Transport

Public transport is important for cruise passengers who want to explore a
destination during a short stopover. If there are no reliable transport
options like taxis, buses, or trains, tourists may struggle to move around.
This makes the destination less attractive for cruise lines, as passengers
prefer places where they can move around easily (International Transport
Forum, 2016).

3. Poor Road Infrastructure

The roads connecting the port to other parts of the city or tourist
attractions must be in good condition. Poor road infrastructure can affect
different types of cruise passengers, including:

 Those who want to stay for a few days before continuing to another
destination.
 Those who only have a few hours to explore during a stopover.
 Those who arrive at the port to begin their cruise (International
Transport Forum, 2016).
If roads are in poor condition, tourists may avoid visiting the
destination, which can reduce the number of cruise ships docking
there.

4. Limited Port Capacity

Not all ports can handle large cruise ships. The depth of the sea near the
dock determines whether a port can accommodate big vessels. Some
ports are too shallow for modern cruise ships, making it impossible for
them to stop. For example, ships like MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview
cannot dock in ports with shallow waters, which limits the number of
destinations they can visit (International Transport Forum, 2016).

5. Health Risks and Pandemics

The COVID-19 pandemic showed how vulnerable sea travel is to the
spread of diseases. Cruise ships carry large numbers of people in close
contact, which increases the risk of spreading viruses. Due to COVID-19
regulations, many cruise companies, including MSC Cruises and Royal
Caribbean, had to suspend operations. This made sea transport less
reliable, as future outbreaks could lead to similar disruptions (Western
Cape’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, 2020).

In overall, the growth of sea water transport is affected by infrastructure
problems, lack of transport options, shallow ports, and health risks. To
