Step 1: Set the scene

It is quite unsettling to view pictures of children who work in the cobalt mines in the DRC. The kids
are subjected to harsh working conditions, working in long hours and dangerous environments
without much regard to their safety and well-being. It is disappointing to view such children deprived
of their childhood and future for profit-making purposes.

Step 2:

1: What is the most likely utilitarian option in the above multiple-choice question?

The most likely utilitarian option is C: "This is just a fact of global supply chains and necessary for
global economic growth, which is in everyone's best interest."

2: Why do you say this?

Premise 1: Cobalt is essential to the world economy, powering key technologies, especially for the
electric vehicle and electronics industries.

Premise 2: The economic benefits of abundant and inexpensive cobalt drive global growth and
technological progress.

Premise 3: Utilitarianism is all about maximizing overall benefits, and those who adhere to this
viewpoint might think that the economic benefits are greater than the harms of child labour.

3: What do you think of this option?

Though it seems to emphasize economic and technical progress, the argument does ignore the
human expense. Justifying child labour to spur world progress is exceedingly unacceptable since it
abrogates people who are poor and vulnerable by disregarding their rights and best interests.
Morality and morality-based principles of action have precedence over financial rewards.

4: What did you choose?

D: "I wonder who's making money on this?"

This option reflects my concern about the immoral structures that support child labour to thrive in
the DRC. It invites scrutiny of who stands to gain from this exploitation and how we can hold such
stakeholders accountable.
