The Interplay Between Centralization and Decentralization in Urban Environments
Introduction
Urbanization is the way cities grow when more people move to them and businesses
expand. Some people and companies stay in the city center, making it busy and full of
shops, offices, and homes. This is called centralization. Other times, people and
businesses move to areas outside the city, which is called decentralization. These
movements change how cities look and work.
There are different ways people move. Suburbanization happens when people leave the
city center to live in quieter neighborhoods with more space. Peripheral urbanization
happens when cities spread out into nearby villages or open land. Counterurbanization
happens when people move away from big cities to small towns or the countryside.
Movements change both the city center and the areas outside. I will also look at how
transportation, jobs, and houses are affected, using examples from different cities
around the world.
Centralization and Its Impact
Centralization is characterized by the concentration of economic, political, and cultural
activities within the urban core. Historically, central business districts (CBDs) have
