To be admitted as an attorney in South Africa, an individual
must meet the following three key requirements:
1. Academic Qualification (Law Degree): The first
requirement is obtaining a recognized law degree (LLB)
from a university or an equivalent qualification. This
degree forms the foundational legal education necessary for
practicing law. A law degree provides a theoretical
understanding of the law, legal procedures, and various

2. Practical Legal Training (Articles of Clerkship): After
obtaining the LLB degree, a candidate must complete a
period of practical legal training known as articles of
clerkship. This is usually a two-year period spent working
