AFL1501
ASSIGNMENT 1 (FORUM) SEMESTER 1..

DUE DATE: 31 March 2025..

PREVIEW:

Task 1
Language Barriers and Cultural Diversity
One experience where language barriers influenced my communication was when I visited a rural area
in South Africa where isiZulu was predominantly spoken. As an English (change to any language of you
want) speaker with limited knowledge of isiZulu, I struggled to communicate effectively. I often relied on
gestures, facial expressions, and simple words to convey my thoughts. This experience made me
appreciate the importance of learning multiple languages and how language connects people. It also
taught me patience and the value of cultural diversity in fostering mutual respect and understanding.
Another instance was when I interacted with Afrikaans-speaking individuals in a formal setting. While I
understood basic Afrikaans, I found it challenging to follow complex conversations. I noticed how non-
verbal cues such as smiles, handshakes, and tone of voice played a crucial role in communication. The
efforts made by both parties to bridge the gap by using simpler terms and body language showed me
how language is deeply tied to identity and belonging. This experience reinforced the need to respect
and preserve linguistic diversity as an essential aspect of culture.
