SUS1501
ASSIGNMENT 2 (SEMESTER 1)..

DUE DATE: March 2025..

PREVIEW:
Evaluation of the Statement "Good for them – they worked hard to earn this" Using Kant’s Formula
of Universal Law
Step 1: State Your Proposed Act as a Maxim
The maxim we are evaluating is: "It is morally acceptable for individuals to accumulate extreme wealth
because they have worked hard for it."

Step 2: Restate This Maxim as a Universal Law
If this maxim were universalized, it would mean that in every society, individuals who work hard are
entitled to accumulate unlimited wealth, regardless of the social or economic disparities this creates.

Step 3: Ask Whether Your Maxim is Conceivable in a World Ruled by This Universal Law
Kant’s universalizability test asks whether a world in which everyone follows this principle could
logically and consistently exist. If every person who worked hard accumulated extreme wealth, the
economic system would become unsustainable due to vast inequalities. Resources are finite, and if a
small percentage of individuals amass disproportionate amounts of wealth, others would be left with
minimal access to necessities. This scenario leads to systemic poverty and economic instability, making
such a universal law inconceivable
