Being a Professional Teacher
1. What is a professional teacher?
A professional teacher is more than just someone who stands in front of a class and
delivers lessons. According to Noddings (1998), a professional teacher is first and
foremost "one caring" before being an "enactor of specialized functions" (p. 175). This
means that teaching is not just about covering the curriculum but also about forming
meaningful relationships with learners, understanding their challenges, and supporting
their overall development.
A professional teacher shows pedagogic care, which means they give full attention to
their students (engrossment) and put their needs first (displacement of motivation). This
approach creates a classroom where learners feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn.
When students know their teacher cares about them, they are more likely to engage
with lessons and do their best academically and personally.
