As a social worker employed in a rehabilitation centre for persons with substance use disorders, you are part of a multidisciplinary team that renders services to persons addicted to various substances like alcohol and drugs. The multidisciplinary team includes a medical practitioner, psychiatrist, psychologist, professional nurse, occupational therapist and spiritual counsellor. Integrated Service Delivery in Social Welfare

Question 1: Theoretical Perspective for Treating Substance Use Disorders

The rehabilitation centre follows a biopsychosocial model in treating persons with
substance use disorders. This model is a holistic approach that considers three key
aspects of a person’s life: biological, psychological, and social factors. It
acknowledges that substance use is not just about physical addiction but also involves
mental health, emotional struggles, and social influences.

 Biological: Some people may have a genetic predisposition to addiction, or their
brains may react differently to substances, making them more vulnerable to
dependence. Medical interventions, such as detoxification and medication, are
often needed to help manage withdrawal symptoms.
 Psychological: Addiction often stems from trauma, stress, or underlying mental
health conditions like depression or anxiety. Therapy and counselling help
individuals address these root causes.
 Social: A person’s environment, relationships, and community play a huge role in
substance use. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol because of peer pressure,
lack of support, or difficult living conditions. Social work interventions, such as
community work and family therapy, help rebuild positive relationships and
support networks.

The rehabilitation centre’s philosophy aligns with this approach because it treats the
whole person rather than just focusing on the physical dependence on substances. By
