As a social worker employed in a rehabilitation centre for
persons with substance use disorders, you are part of a
multidisciplinary team that renders services to persons addicted
to various substances like alcohol and drugs. The
multidisciplinary team includes a medical practitioner,
psychiatrist, psychologist, professional nurse, occupational
therapist and spiritual counsellor. The rehabilitation facility also
provides individual counselling, family interventions, group
work and community work programmes as part of their services.
The social worker’s job includes individual counselling and
conducting group work with persons with substance use
disorders. The rehabilitation centre’s philosophy includes a
holistic perspective taking in consideration all subsystems of the
person’s functioning during treatment. The social worker is also
tasked with undertaking community work projects. The
community members of the neighbourhood in which the
rehabilitation centre is situated are wary of the persons admitted
to the centre, believing they are thieves, gangsters and persons
who are not to be tolerated in the neighbourhood. The
community members in the neighbourhood have a negative
image of and a lack of sympathy for the recipients of this
service; therefore, they do not want to get involved as volunteers
with this rehabilitation centre. The biggest role of the social
worker will be to change the community members’ image about

psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. The goal is to
address all factors contributing to the person’s addiction and
overall well-being, ensuring comprehensive treatment that
fosters long-term recovery and reintegration into society.
Rationale for Supporting the Holistic Theoretical
Perspective:
1. Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Approach:
o The biological aspect addresses the physical

dependence on substances, managing withdrawal
symptoms, and any co-occurring medical conditions.
o The psychological element focuses on mental health,

including understanding and addressing underlying
issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression, or other
psychological disorders that may contribute to
substance use.
o The social aspect involves the individual's

relationships with family, peers, and their role in the
