Question 1: Short Answer Questions (30 Marks)

Introduction

Language, identity, and culture are deeply interconnected
components of human experience, especially in the African
context where oral traditions, naming conventions, and
multilingualism play significant roles in shaping social relations
and belief systems. This assignment, based on Units 3 and 4 of
the module, explores how language not only serves as a tool for
communication but also as a vehicle for cultural preservation and
identity formation. Through short and long answer questions as
well as an essay, the assignment examines key concepts such as
naming conventions, proverbs, multilingualism, religious
expression, and the use of language in interpersonal and ritual
contexts. The ultimate aim is to show how language functions
both as a personal identifier and a communal archive that sustains
African cultural values across generations.

1.1 Define the term "Naming conventions" and discuss the
significance in an African culture. (Unit 3.4)

Naming conventions refer to culturally defined systems and
practices through which individuals are given names based on
familial, environmental, or spiritual factors¹. In African culture,
these conventions are not arbitrary; names often reflect the

circumstances of a child’s birth, aspirations of the family,
ancestral lineage, and even social or environmental conditions at
the time². For example, in isiZulu culture, a child born during a
difficult time may be named “Sibusiso,” meaning “blessing,” as a
declaration of hope and gratitude³. Naming is thus a form of oral
tradition that preserves identity, reinforces communal bonds, and
affirms cultural continuity⁴. The act of naming can also symbolize
a person’s connection to the land, the clan, or spiritual beliefs⁵.

1.2 In what ways does language relate to identity? Discuss
two examples taken from Unit 3.6.

Language and identity are deeply intertwined, as language
functions both as a marker of identity and as a medium through
which identity is constructed and expressed⁶. Firstly, language
reflects an individual’s cultural affiliation and social belonging.
For instance, in multilingual African contexts, the use of
indigenous languages such as isiXhosa or Sepedi signifies ethnic
heritage and pride⁷. Speaking one’s mother tongue in social and
ceremonial settings reinforces community bonds and cultural
affirmation. Secondly, language choice can express personal
identity and political consciousness. For example, postcolonial
African writers often use indigenous languages in literature or
mix them with colonial languages to resist cultural erasure and
assert autonomy⁸. Such linguistic choices are not merely
stylistic—they are ideological acts that challenge dominant
narratives and reclaim identity⁹.
