1. The Impact of Digital Skills on Student Retention in Open-Distance Learning
Introduction
Open-distance learning (ODL) has become an essential mode of education, offering
flexibility to students who cannot attend traditional institutions. However, many students
struggle to complete their studies due to various challenges, including a lack of digital
skills. This essay agrees with the claim that insufficient digital skills contribute to student
dropout rates in ODL institutions. Without these skills, students face difficulties in
accessing learning materials, participating in online discussions, and completing
assignments, which ultimately leads to frustration and withdrawal.
The Role of Digital Skills in ODL Success
Digital literacy is a fundamental requirement for ODL students, as learning is primarily
conducted online. Students must navigate learning management systems (LMS), submit
assignments electronically, and communicate through virtual platforms. Those who lack
these skills often struggle to access course materials, resulting in academic
underperformance and disengagement.
Furthermore, technical challenges, such as troubleshooting software issues and
understanding online research methods, can overwhelm students who are not proficient
with digital tools. This frustration often leads to demotivation and eventual dropout.
