Assignment 1 Semester 1 2025
Unique Number: 846754
Due Date: 2 April 2025
1: INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION
1.1 The African Perspective of Communication
In the African context, communication is deeply rooted in orality, communal engagement,
and shared cultural values. Unlike Western models that focus on individual expression, the
African perspective emphasizes collective meaning-making and relationship-building.
Communication is often multimodal, incorporating oral storytelling, proverbs, music, dance,
and symbols to convey messages.
For example, oral storytelling is a key form of communication, used to pass down history,
traditions, and moral values from one generation to another. Proverbs and idioms play a
crucial role in indirect communication, offering wisdom in a culturally relevant way.
Drumming and traditional dances serve as non-verbal communication tools to express
emotions, relay messages, or mark significant events. In addition, greeting rituals highlight
the communal nature of African societies, as they often include inquiries about family well-
being rather than just personal status.
