Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow.

A FAX IS TRAVELING THROUGH A DRY LAND – THOMAS MOFOLO
As he walked, he arrived at a large river, flowing through the forest. He looked around and saw tall
trees, which seemed to compete with those on the other side. He admired them. But he realized he
could not reach the ones on the other side. Then he descended and undressed. He tapped the water with
his stick and found that it was deep. He turned back and cautiously entered the water. He went, went,
went, and when he was in the middle, he felt the current. When he lifted his foot again, he rose.

Just as he began to lift his foot out of the water, with the other still in the water, he saw a crocodile
coming towards him, already opening its jaws. He quickly got out of the water and ran to escape. As
he ran, he suddenly stopped! He saw the shadow of a snake, a long, elongated creature. He saw the
body but not the head. It was a strange, terrifying creature. He stood frozen! Then, behind him, the
snake was close! As he turned, he saw the head near him. It stared at him, motionless, with its tongue
out. He was filled with fear, but these were just harmless snakes that had no interest in humans. Then it
turned and slid into the river.

He began to breathe. Now he felt truly lost, realizing he would die in this land, far from home. He ran
and emerged on the other side of the forest.
