Question 1: Problems of Overcrowding in African Cities and Solutions
1. Housing Shortages and Slums – With too many people and not enough
affordable housing, many are forced to live in informal settlements or slums,
which lack proper sanitation, clean water, and electricity.
2. Traffic Congestion and Poor Transport Systems – More people mean more
vehicles, but many cities lack proper road networks, leading to heavy traffic and
long commuting times.
3. Strain on Public Services – Schools, hospitals, and water supply systems
struggle to keep up with growing populations, leading to poor healthcare,
overcrowded classrooms, and frequent water shortages.
4. Unemployment and Poverty – As cities grow, job opportunities don’t always
expand at the same rate, leaving many young people unemployed and
vulnerable to crime and poverty.
5. Environmental Degradation – Overcrowding leads to more waste, pollution,
and deforestation, worsening air quality and living conditions.
How Can These Problems Be Addressed?
Better Urban Planning: Governments must plan cities more effectively by
expanding infrastructure, investing in housing projects, and improving public
transport.
