,1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 I, JOHN SIBEKO, the Accused in this matter, am charged
with the offence of assault with the intention to do grievous
bodily harm, in contravention of Section 1 of the Assaults Act,
Act 85 of 1997.
1.2 I plead not guilty to the charge of assault with the intention
to do grievous bodily harm as laid against me by the State.


2. THE ALLEGATIONS MADE AGAINST ME
2.1 I understand that the State alleges that on or about [date], at
[location], I unlawfully assaulted the complainant,
[Complainant’s Name], with the intention of causing him
grievous bodily harm, thereby committing the offence as
charged.
2.2 The State further alleges that I caused the complainant
injuries to his [specify body part], which required medical
treatment.


3. MY VERSION OF THE EVENTS
3.1 I admit that on the day in question, I did have an altercation
with the complainant. However, I deny that I had the intention to
cause him grievous bodily harm.

4.1 I assert that I acted in self-defense, as I was faced with an
imminent threat of harm from the complainant. In terms of
Section 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act, I am entitled to
defend myself from unlawful aggression and to protect myself
from injury.
4.2 The complainant’s actions, including [describe any
