The Sociological Imagination: The Promise
1. Pick any social issue in the news today. Describe how you could better understand your
selection by considering, “how this situation was affected by how society is structured?”
Explain your answer.

The Social Issue I have chosen was Bullying though I know it is a Broad Topic, but I wanted
to break it down and focus on a more specific topic. I thought it would be best to focus on two
parts The Bullies and Cell Phones. I understand that if a victim is being bullied usually the bully
is letting out their anger on the victim that has been piling up inside the bully for so long. The
Second Issue I wanted to bring up was about Cellphones, how are Cell Phones related to
Bullying? Because Cellphones are the allies to a student when bullying is around, a student could
look and see the bullying they could also take a video or a picture but instead of showing it to a
teacher or Principle they instead post it over Social Media which is one of the worse things to do.
I will go over Part 1 and 2 with sources found from online and I hope that I make my points
stand tall over these two important subjects and hopefully I can successfully change the point of
view of other students and send a message so that everyone can do the right thing instead of
watching bullying go on.

Part 1 The Bullies
“Children who were exposed to violence in the home engaged in higher levels of physical
bullying than youngsters who were not witnesses to such behavior, according to a study by
researchers from the University of Washington and Indiana University.” [ CITATION Joe06 \l

While I read this article from Washington.edu it was filled with facts and quotes that
caught my eye about the Bullies. You see when there is a child being bullied in their school the
attention goes to that person being bullied if they are caught at the right time. But no one ever
wonders why is this person bullying the other person? They just assume that the person that is
doing the bullying only wants to have a more popular status instead of considering that the bully
is actually a victim in their own household. Or they are witnessing the bullying from older
siblings, to their parents, and others around them. Who are the top role models in a child’s
household the one person they always want to follow? That person is their parents, if a young
child starts to see their mom and dad fighting they assume if their parents are becoming violent
with each other. That child can assume that if they want to get their way they have to become
violent with others to get what they want from their friends or classmates. If that child gets away
with being violent they will follow that pattern into repetition because there is no authority
telling them to stop and help them realize how wrong, it is.

Understanding the signs that your child may be a bully could be so hard sometimes
though when the time comes to look for the signs how can a person see those signs and handle it.
The signs to understand that your child or a specific student could be a bully. These are some of
