Introduction

Toyota South Africa operates within a complex and dynamic supply chain network,
sourcing components globally and locally while maintaining high production efficiency
through the Toyota Production System (TPS). However, the company has faced
significant supply chain disruptions, highlighting critical vulnerabilities. This report
explores Toyota South Africa's supply chain challenges, including international
sourcing problems, unforeseen disruptions, inventory decisions, production strategies,
and supplier selection criteria.

1.1 International global sourcing challenges/problems

Toyota sources raw materials and components from global and local suppliers. Global
sourcing presents numerous benefits, such as cost reduction and access to high-
quality components, but also introduces significant challenges. Four key issues Toyota
South Africa faces in global sourcing include:

Geopolitical Instability, Regulatory and Political Risks: Global sourcing exposes
Toyota to risks from political instability in supplier countries, which can disrupt supply.

Currency fluctuations: Currency volatility impacts procurement costs, making
financial planning challenging. These changes in exchange rates can significantly
impact the cost of imported components, affecting Toyota's profitability.

Supply Chain Complexity: Managing multiple suppliers across different continents
increases logistical challenges and coordination difficulties (Ambe & Badenhorst-
Weiss, 2022).

Long lead times: Sourcing from distant locations can result in extended lead times,
making Toyota’s supply chain less responsive to changes in demand. Sourcing from
international suppliers, particularly in Asia and North America, exposes Toyota to
longer lead times, affecting production schedules and responsiveness (Simchi-Levi et
al., 2019).

Quality control issues: Managing quality across multiple international suppliers can
be complex, leading to variability in the quality of components.

Transportation and logistics challenges: International sourcing involves complex
logistics, including customs, port operations, and shipping delays, which may disrupt
the flow of components.

These challenges require Toyota to develop robust risk management strategies and
build strong relationships with its suppliers.

1.2 Supply chain strategy

Based on the case study, a leagile supply chain strategy would be most appropriate
for Toyota. Toyota South Africa has encountered unpredictable supply chain
disruptions, including:

Labour Strikes (2019): The company faced a severe shortage of key components
due to a strike at Auto Parts South Africa (ASA), its primary supplier. This led to a
temporary shutdown, highlighting the risk of supplier dependency.

Natural Disasters (2022 Floods): Severe flooding in KwaZulu-Natal damaged
Toyota’s Prospecton plant, causing extensive production delays and financial losses
(Branquinho, 2022).
