Because HRD is so important from a strategic point of view, it is advantageous to examine these interventions and see how they can be used as OD interventions to maximise their value. For Assignment 5 you are required to do a literature review. You can choose ONE of the HRD Interventions listed below: • leadership development programmes using 360-degree feedback • assessment and development centres (also used in leadership development) A literature review is academic writing that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the academic literature on a specific topic placed in context. A literature review includes a critical evaluation of the researched material such as articles, books and other academic online sources. The same principles will however apply. 3.2. Instructions Choose one of the topics indicated and write a literature review to display the in-depth knowledge that you have gained on the topic by reading various academic literature pieces. literature review should contain the following sections and headings: Title page Table of content 1. Introduction 2. An in-depth discussion on (1) leadership development programmes using 360-degree feedback OR (2) assessment and development centres Use your own headings and sub-headings based on the information that you want to convey 1. Declaration of authenticity Your literature, section 2, should be approximately 6 pages long. Make sure to use credible academic sources of information and to reference the sources in-text as well as in the list of references. You can use either APA or Harvard referencing as a referencing method. Your answer will be evaluated on the following elements: • Comprehensiveness of the literature review. (5) “Comprehensive” means that you included all or nearly all the elements or aspects of something, you provided a broad overview of the topic. • Logical flow of arguments. (5) There is a logical flow to the structure of the sections of the literature review. Use transitions, or connecting words, phrases and clauses to show the relationship between ideas. • Explanation of how the HRD intervention can be used as an OD tool. (5) • Number and quality of academic sources referenced as well as technical care of the assignment. (5) Academic sources refer to books/articles/online sources other than the sources provided as part of the course content. In this video, Todd, the Senior Manager of Organisation Development at Disney’s
Orlando Resort shares his passion regarding empowering employees and provide
employees with tools and resources to ensure that they can be successful in their
roles. Todd indicates that he works as part of Disney’s HR Team and from what he
shares it is clear that he is very passionate about human resource development. He
mentions various aspects that traditionally form part of HRD such as leadership
coaching, which is his responsibility.
Scenario:
You have been approached by the newly appointed CEO of Disney Resorts, Becka
Roberts, to provide your expert view on the integration of OD and HRD. She is of the
opinion that Todd and the employees reporting to him, should be moved out of the HR
Department and that a separate department that focuses only on organisation
development (OD) should be established. During a briefing she explains to you that the
company experiences consistent change whether it be due to changes in customer
expectations, laws governing the industry or financial challenges. She is of the opinion
that the huge challenge regarding continuous change necessitates a separate OD
department. She is however somewhat concerned about how exactly the split between
HR and OD should be made. Should Todd retain his responsibility for leadership
coaching, or should this become the responsibility of the newly formed HRD
department? She is unsure of whether it makes business sense to separate OD and
HRD.
Ms Roberts asks you to write a report in which you recommend the most suitable
structure for the organisation based on your extensive experience as an HRD
practitioner. She asks you to base your recommendations on current literature as this
will assist her in motivating the correct course of action to her superiors. She asks you
to specifically address the following:
1. Explain Human Resource Development and Organisational Development.
Incorporate current literature in your discussion so that the two concepts are clearly
distinguishable.
2. Based on current literature, explain the interface between Human Resource
Development and Organisation Development.
3. Make a recommendation regarding the structuring of HRD and OD at the Disney
