Medicine Through Time Timeline• 1348 - Black Death arrives in England
• c1440 - Printing Press invented
• 1536 - Dissolution of the English monasteries
• 1543 - Publication of Vesalius’ “The fabric of the human body”
• 1628 - William Harvey publishes his book on the circulation of the blood
• 1660 - Royal Society meet in London for the first time
• 1665 - Great Plague arrives in Britain
• 1676 - Thomas Sydenham publishes “Observationes Medicae”
• 1795 - Humphrey Davy, a dentist’s assistant inhaled nitrous oxide (laughing
gas) and found it numbed pain
• 1796-1798 - Edward Jenner discovers the smallpox vaccination
• 1803 - Royal Jennerian society established
• 1837-1840 - 35,000 people die in a smallpox outbreak, The Lancet, a medical
journal, blame inoculation for the outbreak
• 1840 - The government make inoculation a crime
- The government agree to provide children with vaccinations at the
taxpayers expense
• 1842 - William E. Clark successfully uses Ether to anaesthetise a patient
• 1846 - Robert Liston, a surgeon used ether when he amputated a patient’s leg

• 1853 - Queen Victoria used chloroform during the birth of Prince Leopold, this
made it very popular and fashionable
