GERONTOLOGICAL VULNERABILITY

People aged 65 years and above are referred to as older adults, and I agree that

this population is vulnerable. Older people at a higher risk of contracting chronic diseases

like diabetes and high blood pressure. Additionally, they are also vulnerable to cognitive

decline and contracting cognitive disorders like dementia. According to a CDC

compendium done by Stevens & Burns (2015), the aging population is growing steadily,

and so is the percentage increase in older people with chronic diseases. Putting such facts

into consideration makes me conclude that older adults are vulnerable and at risk.

According to Laceulle (2017), many hospitalized older adults have nutritional

complications, mostly contributed by cognitive alterations, stress, and loneliness, which

makes up part of a social network. Additionally, an increase of vulnerability is caused by

low tolerance to physical activity, functional limitations, and decreased sensory

awareness.

Several interventions can be employed in minimizing and doing away with these

risks, which include doing some light physical activities like taking a walk in the

neighborhood, increasing more interactions with people to curb loneliness and improve
