TEST DATE FOR MY SECTION - 14 SEPTEMBER 202
ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE – 27 August 2023
,RECAP – habitat loss and fragmentation
Tropical forests- sustain traditions, livelihoods & being carbon reservoirs;
logging is a real challenge
Rivers and deltas- provide fresh water & are habitats for marine life
- Are polluted and dammed for electricity and freshwater supply
- Damming impacts genetic material exchange & results in human popula
relocation
Wetlands- are stopovers for migratory birds & offer other ecosystem servic
- Wood harvesting, peat mining
Seasonal drylands- provide various ecosystem services but threatened by
desertification
Leading causes of habitat loss and fragmentation
Human population has led to;
- Agriculture, urban expansion and overutilization are all pausing threats
these ecosystems
- Unsustainable utilization of resources
We need to demonstrate a strong link between conservation and human
welfare to policy makers and politicians
, Water Pollution
• any chemical, biological, or physical change in water
quality that harms living organisms or makes water
unsuitable for desired uses
• occurs when pollutants are discharged directly/indirect
into water bodies without adequate treatment to remov
harmful compounds
• effect is damaging not only to individual species and
populations, but also to the natural biological communi
• natural phenomena such as volcanoes, algae blooms,
storms and earthquakes affect water quality and the
ecological status of water.
• although mostly caused by humans!
, TYPES OF WATER
POLLUTION
– Point source pollution: specific location
(drainpipes, ditches, sewer lines).
– Nonpoint source pollution: cannot be traced to
a single site of discharge (atmospheric deposition,
agricultural/industrial/residential runoff)
