Zooming In—Critical Thinking Answers
Thorough Preparation Triggers Interview Success
• Can novice job seekers predict what a job interview will involve?

Solution
Surprisingly enough, even novice job seekers can closely predict what a job interview will
entail. Most interviewers ask similar questions, sometimes in the form of an invitation such
as Tell me about yourself. This chapter will help candidates respond confidently by offering a
pattern to follow. Job interviews tend to follow a traditional sequence, which is discussed in
this chapter. The chapter also presents many categories of popular questions and even
suggests responses to some. In this chapter candidates learn what to do before, during, and
after a job interview. These tips can greatly reduce the stress that comes with making
important career and life decisions.

16: Interviewing and Following Up

• How is interviewing a two-way street? What does this mean for job candidates?

Solution
Interviewing is indeed a two-way street. Candidates must promote their best qualities and
impress the company. However, companies must sell the position and the company to
candidates. Recruiters realize that good candidates are difficult to find and that they may
have other offers. In addition, it is very expensive for a company to make a “bad hire”—that
is, to hire someone who doesn’t fit in or decides to leave. Because candidates are evaluating
the position, it is appropriate for them to ask questions about the company and the job.
They should find out whether this position is the type of work they really want to do. Turn-
around questions are expected in an interview. However, the candidate should maintain a
sense of balance and not take over the interview by asking too many questions. In the end,
however, candidates should ask enough questions in the two-way flow to be sure they
understand the expectations of the company. Recruiters and candidates alike want to be
sure they are a good fit.

• How can job seekers show recruiters or hiring managers that they are invested in a
position during the job interview?

Solution
Job candidates can demonstrate their interest and investment in a position by doing
considerable research to prepare for the interview. Job candidates should learn as much as
possible about the company, the position, and even the recruiter before the interview. This
chapter provides many helpful tips on how to effectively prepare for a job interview.

Zooming In—Your Turn Solution
Applying Your Skills With Don Georgevich
• Identify three to five skills that employers seek among new hires in your career area.
LinkedIn research revealed that the most important “soft” skills in demand today are
creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and time management. A list from
the National Association of Colleges and Employers named the following six top
attributes desired by employers: written communication skills, problem-solving,
ability to work in a team, initiative, analytical-quantitative skills, and strong work
ethic. In an e-mail memo addressed to Don Georgevich (but mailed to your instructor),
describe a success story showing how you developed each skill or attribute that you
name.

Solution
Many students find it difficult to translate experiences from course work in school or entry-
level or low-wage jobs such as babysitting and waiting tables into anecdotes that illustrate
innate skills necessary for higher-level positions. Encourage students to think critically about
the skills they have developed in school and how they relate to their chosen careers.
Perhaps jobs such as dealing with a cranky toddler or a difficult customer at a pizza parlor

can illustrate good people skills. Students will feel empowered once they realize that they do
have skills employers will find attractive.

Encourage them to write a scenario describing each skill or trait they have identified. Even
better: Have students participate in a simulated job interview before the class. Encourage
them to practice their success stories until they are perfect and can be told without notes.
This kind of interview practice will pay off when they face job interviews that are extremely
important to them.

Ethics Check Answers
Job Looky-Loo?
• Nichole was happy with her job, but she was curious about other job possibilities. Is it
unethical for her to seek job offers if she intends to stay at her current job?

Solution
It’s not unethical for Nichole to keep her options open and explore the job market in her
field. However, she should certainly not schedule interviews during her working time. Nor
should she allow her engagement in her current position to flag. Regardless, few jobs are
perfect. Even if she intends to remain in her current position, one never knows when the
employment scene may darken. If Nichole finds something superior to her current
employment, she may agree to an interview. She should, however, be very selective because
frequent lateral movement could identify her as a job hopper.

Never Faced an Ethical Challenge?
• As businesses increasingly emphasize workplace ethics, you may be asked to tell
about a time when you were challenged ethically. One workplace compliance officer
advised candidates not to respond that you have never faced an ethical challenge.
“You want a candidate,” he said, “who avoids misconduct, not someone who lies and
says they’ve never done anything wrong.” —Tim Mazur, COO of the Ethics and
Compliance Officer Association. Do you agree?

Solution
Students may agree that job candidates should not lie by saying that they never were
challenged ethically. But what should they say? Tim Mazur, COO of the Ethics and
Compliance Officer Association, recommends saying something like this: “I was part of a
proposal team and the marketing people inserted language that overstated what we were
doing. I argued that we shouldn’t include the language but I lost and it was left in. I signed off
on the project.” That represents true commitment to ethical standards. A similar challenging
experience is one in which a worker is asked to lie for a boss. For example, let’s say that
Michelle’s boss asks her to tell callers and visitors that he is in a meeting, when she knows he
is on the golf course. Instead of lying, she could respond simply by saying that he is out of
the office. This is not lying. Job candidates should be prepared with authentic scenarios for
questions involving ethics.
