Introduction
Violence against women and girls is a global pandemic that can affect someone for an
entire lifetime. Most societies are dominated by patriarchal power structures, in which male
leadership is seen as the norm, and men hold majority of the power. Patriarchy is a result of
social and political systems that have historically treated men as superior to women
[ CITATION Lau16 \l 1033 ]. This has resulted in men perpetuating violence against women
with the utmost impunity, forcing women to fight not only for their basic needs and rights to
participate fully in society, but for their human right to their own bodies.
