Question 1

are not fulfilled in the picture, explaining your answers. (10 marks)

https://torange.biz/life-behind-bars-1199

Answer:

Fulfilled:

1. Food and water – It looks like the dogs have water and food in their kennels.

, 2. Shelter – The dogs have shelter from bad weather and have a dog house which can
provide them with a warm, comfortable place to sleep or rest. The environment
looks safe and secure to prevent risk of injury to the animal or people in the vicinity.

Not fulfilled:

3. Environmental enrichment – The dogs do not have any environmental enrichment in
the form of stimulating surroundings that allow the animal to behave and exercise in
a way typical for its species within the environment. As a result these dogs may feel
bad both physically and psychologically. They will be bored and therefore very likely
to show problem behaviour.
4. Exercise – These dogs are in a small kennel and not able to expend energy by moving
and running around. The dogs’ physical health will deteriorate and it may become
frustrated or depressed. This could also lead to behavioural problems.
5. Correct handling and training – We cannot be sure if these dogs are trained or
handled correctly.

Question 2

Puppies can start eating solid food at ……. weeks of age but should not be removed from the
mother until they are………. weeks of age. (2 marks)

Answer:

Puppies’ eyes open when they are about 10- to 14 days old, and they can start eating solids
from 3 weeks of age. They can be weaned from 6 weeks of age, but they should not be
removed from the mother or sold until they are 8 weeks old, as important socialisation skills
are learnt in this time period.

Question 3

Name two ways in which the QUALITY of protein in an animal food can be measured,
explaining each. (4 marks)

Answer:

Biological value (BV) - A protein with a high biological value is efficiently digested and
absorbed, whereas a protein with a low biological value cannot be well utilised by the
animal, and much of it is excreted as waste.
Digestibility – is affected by the way it is processed into a food. For example, cooked beans
have a higher digestibility than raw beans. Although the biological value of both will be the
same, the digestibility of the cooked beans is higher and therefore more of the protein can
be used by the body.

Also refer to the study guide:

6.2.1.3 Protein quality
