Essay on using authentic materials and internet
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching
The advantage of using authentic materials in foreign language is valuable because we get to
provide higher level students the opportunity to experience the language in its natural form as it is
used on a daily basis by native speakers, helping them to learn how to further communicate in a
way that is depicted in every day use of the language. Authentic materials are valuable in that they
also provide the students with insight into the language, target culture and opinion on various
topics. It guides the students with regard to formal and informal writing and speaking such as the
different ways to talk and write when communicating with a boss versus with a friend.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items
I have chosen to use an article called WHAT IS INTELLIGENT LIFE? as my authentic text for this
group of students. The original article is quite lengthy at 3277 words but I have adapted it down to
534 words. The reason I chose this article is because the vocabulary was not only suitable to the
higher level of students but also the topic is interesting and fun to all the students, regardless of
their ages, jobs, cultures, religious beliefs or what their future plans entail. I have chosen this
article as intelligent life is a part of every person’s life. I chose to shorten this article as there is a lot
of unnecessary reading that could cause the students to lose interest in the article. There is a lot of
unnecessary information, references and abbreviations that are not relevant to the students or
their abilities to speak and/or understand English. I chose this article because it is relevant to all
the students and their various circumstances. AI plays a role in every single person’s life on a daily
basis in various forms. It is applicable to everyone no matter where they come from or what their
particular interests are, even a housewife uses artificial intelligence to some extent. The text is
written for native speakers and therefore challenges the students but also has understandable
text.
I have chosen the specific vocabulary words that are highlighted as they are both challenging and
appropriate for the higher-level students such as these. I want them to challenge the students but
not be too difficult and cause them to be frustrated and give up. These words suit the student’s
level and the topic well.
c) Why my activities would be appropriate for this class
The dictionary quiz is appropriate for the students as it not only gives them practice with using a
dictionary, but also challenges them in several ways such as finding synonyms, constructing
sentences, pronunciation, reading etc. On top of that, this activity gives the student conversational
practice as they complete the activities in pairs and discuss their finding and so forth. I chose to do
an online AI movie research activity because ‘movies’ is a generalized topic enjoyed by most. This
activity therefore keeps all the students focused as they are interested and entertained by the
idea. Again, this builds conversational skills as it is done in pairs and the activity is discussed
amongst themselves. It also gives the students reading practice, writing practice and vocabulary
practice. Furthermore, students get to gain understanding of the topic and the context in a way
