Sae3701 Exam Prep Unit 1 Unit 1 Precolonial Education Precolonial society: The period before the arrival of colonisers in a specific territory. In the South African context precolonial societies existed before the arrival of the Dutch in 1652 and before the extensive colonisation process by the British in the 1800s. In the formative years a child’s mother oversaw their education. The community played a bigger role when the child become a teenager (Seroto, 2011). A child’s language skills were taught and learnt from the mother and extended family. The older members of the clan taught the children about work, hunting, rituals and other cultural traits such as trance dancing, herding and the manufacturing of equipment (Seroto, 2011).
