○ Long multiplication
How to do long multiplication
1. Start by looking at the basics of multiplication simply
multiplying a number by another. E.g. 2 x 24
The answer would be 48, because 2 x 20 = 40 and 2 x 4 =8
2. Now what if you solved that question in a different format?
Instead of writing the sums from left to right try or stack
them on top of each other.
E.g. 2
X 24
, 2
3. Answer the question going from the smallest number to the
largest. In this example 4 is the smallest number and 20 the
biggest.
E.g
2 2
(X 2) (X 4)
4 8
= 48
4. With having this example let’s try multiplying 12 x 234
So the number one thing is to stack the numbers above each
other. You are going to multiply each number separately going
from right to left.
E.g 12
234
Set up the numbers: Write 234 on top and 12 below it, aligning by
place values.
Multiply the ones place of the bottom number (2) by each digit of
the top number (234):
● 2 × 4 = 8. Write 8 in the ones place.
● 2 × 3 = 6. Write 6 next to the 8.
● 2 × 2 = 4. Write 4 next to the 6, so we have 468 for the first
row.
