Aftermarket - ANS-The network of businesses that supplies replacement parts and
services to independent service shops, specialty repair shops, car and truck
dealerships, fleet and industrial operations, and the general buying public.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) - ANS-established a voluntary certification
program for automotive, heavy-duty truck, auto body repair, and engine machine shop
technicians
Bay - ANS-a work area for a complete vehicle
Deductible - ANS-a certain amount of money that the owner must pay, according to the
terms of warranty
Diagnostic skills - ANS-identifying and solving problems the first time the vehicle is
brought into the shop
Independent shops - ANS-may service all types of vehicles or may specialize in
particular types of cars and trucks or specific systems of a car
Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) - ANS-an annual or biannual test that automobiles must
pass
Jobbers - ANS-sell parts and supplies to shops and do-it-yourselfers
Lead tech - ANS-the shop foreman of the team
Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) - ANS-Parts manufactured by the original
vehicle manufacturer
Preventive maintenance (PM) - ANS-maintenance procedures deisgne to prevent
problems
Service advisor - ANS-the person who greets customers at a service center
Service director - ANS-someone who oversees the operation of the service and parts
departments as well as the body shop
Service technician - ANS-assesses vehicle problems, performs all necessary diagnostic
tests, and competently repairs or replaces faulty components
Shop foreman - ANS-one who helps technicians with more difficult tasks and serves as
the quality control expert
