UNIT 1 – Changes during the industrial Revolution in Britain
Wealth from the slave trade
The way people lived and earned in Britain changes in 1750 to 1850
These changes were known as the Industrial Revolution
Before the industrial revolution people would work on the land
Some goods were also made in domestic industries (at home)
After the industrial revolution people moved to the urban areas to work
and they worked in harsh conditions in the factories = Because Britain was
a wealthy country
Wealthy British people – invested their money in inventions and factories
Most of their money came from the process of colonisation



The impact of colonies
In 18th century – Britain has lots of colonies
They were a source of raw materials
These raw materials were need to develop Britain’s manufacturing
industries
It provided Britain with new markets where they could sell their products
Foreign trade increased quickly – Britain become most powerful trading nation in
Europe
The buyers became very rich
They used their money to finance the industrial Revolution



The Translantic Salve Trade

Most of Britain’s wealth came from the slave trade
Profits were used to finance the industrial Revolution
In the 1700s Britain mainly traded with Europe
This changed in the 18th century because Britain focused on the slave
trade
People began to trade with the colonies in the West indies and North
America
This trade was known as the Translatic Slave Trade or the “triangular
trade”.
People made a lot of money from the salve trade
Britain went to West Africa with new inventions like (pots, pans, guns and alcohol)
Britain sold their inventions in exchange for salves
The salves were shipped to through the west indies and landed up in the
American mainland
These slaves were sold for 5 times the price that they had cost from the
African coast
This money was used to buy sugar, coffee, tobacco which was then
available in Britain
This money was used to build factories and machines that developed
during the industrial revolution
