ASSESSMENT 03: WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
DUE DATE: October 2024
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS. QUESTION 1
1.1 Think about communicating in the context of your family, your social life and circle
of friends, your life as a Unisa-student and other areas of life such as places of
work and spiritual communities. Give one example of each of the following communicative
situations from your own life and expand on each example by explaining what makes it an
appropriate example:
1.1.1 Intrapersonal Communication
Reflecting on my academic goals as a UNISA student. Intrapersonal communication occurs within
oneself. When I think about my academic performance, set goals, or plan my study schedule for
the upcoming TMN3702 exam, I’m engaging in intrapersonal communication. This self-reflection
helps me evaluate my progress and areas needing improvement, which is crucial for personal
growth and success in my studies.
1.1.2 Transpersonal Communication
Meditating and feeling a connection to a higher power during a church service. Transpersonal
communication refers to experiences of connection with a higher power, beyond the self. During
church, when I pray or meditate, I feel a connection with something greater than myself, which
brings peace and purpose. This communication can be deeply personal and spiritual, making it an
ideal example of transpersonal communication in a spiritual context.
1.1.3 Group Communication
Participating in a study group for BPT1501 with fellow UNISA students. Group communication
involves interaction between multiple people with a shared goal. In my study group, we discuss
course material, exchange notes, and clarify concepts from Jackson & Stent. This environment
, allows for collaborative learning, where everyone contributes, making it an effective form of group
communication.
1.1.4 Public Communication
Giving a presentation on public safety to Grade 3 learners. Public communication involves
addressing an audience with information or a message. When I present public safety tips to Grade
3 learners, I aim to engage them in a way they understand and respond to. This setting requires
clear, accessible language and visual aids, which makes it a practical example of public
communication.
1.2 To identify real-life examples of different channels of organisational communication, find a
picture that depicts personal communication in an organisational setting. Identify the specific
personal channel depicted and discuss it in a short paragraph.
