(a) Explanation of the term 'conflict' in a modern novel or drama (10 marks)

In literature, conflict refers to the struggle between opposing forces that drive the plot and create

tension within a story. Conflict can be internal or external.

• Internal conflict occurs within a character when they experience personal dilemmas or

emotional struggles. For example, a character might be torn between doing what is right

and following their desires.
