, Question 1
1.1 With the above statement in mind, discuss how the following five pre-
number concepts form the foundational understanding of numbers and
how these concepts contribute to logical thinking about numbers.
One-to-one correspondence is the ability to match each object in one set with exactly
one object in another set. This concept forms the foundation for understanding
numbers by establishing the idea of quantity and counting.

Comparison involves understanding the concepts of more, less, and equal. It helps
children develop an understanding of quantity and sets the stage for understanding
mathematical symbols like greater than and less than.

Conservation refers to the understanding that the quantity of an object remains the
same even when its appearance changes. This concept contributes to logical
thinking about numbers by laying the groundwork for understanding the permanence
of quantity.

Ordering involves arranging objects or numbers in a sequence based on a specific
attribute, such as size or quantity. It helps children understand the relative position of
numbers and objects, which is essential for developing number sense.

Subitising is the ability to recognize the number of objects in a small set without
counting. It contributes to logical thinking about numbers by developing the ability to
quickly recognize and understand small quantities, which is foundational for mental
arithmetic.

1.2 Use an example of appropriate activities for each of the above (1.1) pre-
number concept to demonstrate your understanding of these concepts
Example Activities

- One-to-One Correspondence: Matching socks in a laundry basket to their
pairs.
- Comparison: Comparing the number of apples on two plates to determine
which plate has more.
