Type of barrier: A language barrier occurs when a learner’s home language is
different from the language used at school. This can result in the learner
struggling to understand lessons, communicate with the teacher, and engage with
their classmates. Language barriers often cause learners to feel isolated or
frustrated, which can negatively impact their learning and participation in class
Manifestations of the barrier: Language barriers are common obstacles in
education, especially when a learner’s home language is different from the
language of instruction used at school. These barriers can manifest in various
ways, affecting the learner’s ability to understand lessons, express ideas, and
interact with peers and teachers. I will discuss the different ways that language
barriers manifest in the classroom and support this discussion with recent
research.
One of the main ways a language barrier shows up is through difficulty in
understanding lessons. Learners who do not speak the language used at school
often struggle to follow what the teacher is saying. According to Vandeyar and
Killen (2021), learners with language barriers may miss important information,
leading to gaps in their learning. This can result in poor academic performance
and frustration for the learner. When learners cannot fully understand what is
being taught, they are unable to process information effectively, which affects
their ability to participate in classroom activities.
Another way a language barrier can manifest is in the learner’s ability to express
themselves. Research by De Klerk and Radford (2020) shows that learners who
are not proficient in the language of instruction often find it difficult to answer
questions, share ideas, or engage in discussions. This can make the learner feel
