, 1 Use examples from the case study to explain the concept of
sustainability. 10
Sustainability refers to the ability to meet present needs without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs. It encompasses three main pillars:
economic viability, environmental protection, and social equity. To explain this concept
in the context of the Vodacom case study, we can look at various initiatives the company
has undertaken that align with sustainable practices.
1. Economic Viability: Vodacom, as a telecommunications provider,
emphasizes the importance of economic sustainability by ensuring profitable growth
while also investing in technological advancements and infrastructure. For example, the
investment in expanding network access to underserved areas not only generates
economic return for Vodacom but also fosters economic development in those regions.
By creating job opportunities and enhancing productivity through connectivity, Vodacom
contributes to the broader economy, demonstrating that a business can thrive while
promoting growth.
2. Environmental Protection: Vodacom has engaged in
several initiatives to minimize its environmental impact. A notable example is the
company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through energy-efficient
technologies and the adoption of renewable energy sources. By investing in solar power
to run network towers and stores, Vodacom reduces its reliance on fossil fuels,
contributing to a decrease in environmental footprint. This approach not only helps the
planet but can also result in cost savings for the company in the long run.
