QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
PART 1:
TEST 1 + EXAM
, Lecture 1: Quantitative Methods, Why We Need Science
Rhiannon Changuion
• Describe Explain Predict and Control behaviour
• Quantitative - logical positivist paradigm / Prediction and causation
• Qualitative - Many different paradigms / In-depth understanding
___________________________________________________________________
GOALS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
1. Description
• Do students who study in front of the TV do worse than those who study in a quiet
environment.
2. Prediction
• If you study in front of the TV, you'll do worse than if you study in a quiet environment.
• Predicting what's going to happen once being observed.
• e.g. studying a relationship and predicting the behaviour of two things example study in front
of the TV and grades.
3. Identify Causes
• Do matric marks influence university outcome?
• What influences these marks?
4. Explaining
• If watching violence on TV causes aggressive behaviour, how?
• e.g. modelling behaviour, desensitisation or could it alter our world understandings.
