Assessment 8 is a written assessment and contributes 25% to your promotion mark. This
assessment measures your achievement of the outcomes of Learning Units 5 and 6.
1.1 Outcomes of Assessment 8
This assessment requires you to demonstrate that you have met the following outcomes
and assessment criteria:
Learning outcome 5
Identify skills needed to teach oral presentation and creative writing in the home and first
additional language.
Assessment criteria:
In this assessment, you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to to the following:
• Use children’s literature to promote oral storytelling.
• Implement guidelines for good storytelling.
• Understand the phases of writing development.
• Understand how stories facilitate writing and how writing facilitates reading.
• Come to see children as writers and develop guidelines for creative writing.
• Demonstrate an understanding of how children’s literature can be used to support
the teaching and learning of an additional language.
Learning outcome 6
Use children’s literature successfully in dealing with social issues such as death, child
abuse and natural disasters.
Assessment criteria:
In this assessment, you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to do the following:
• Plan and present lessons using children’s literature as a counselling strategy to deal
with social challenges.
• Explain social phenomena as encountered in different social environments through
literature.
