ALEKS Intermediate Algebra
Least Common Multiple (LCM) - answer(Noun) The smallest number that is a multiple
(a number that is times a whole number) of two or more given numbers.
i.e. The LCM of 4 and 6 is 12
- Multiples:
4: 4,8,12,16, 20, 24 ...
6: 6, 12, 18, 24 ...
Common: 12, 24
Least Common: 12
Another way to find is to look at Prime Factorizations:
It is possible to find the LCM for more than 2 numbers.
Prime Factorization - answer(Noun) A prime (a whole number greater then 1 whose
only factors are 1 and itself ) number that is a factor (a whole number that divides
another number exactly) of a given number
A number as a product of its prime factor
i.e. Prime Factorization of 30: 2x3x5
24: 2x2x2x3
45: 3x3x5
- Find using factor tree's
Factor - answerA whole number is a factor of another if it divides that number exactly.
Prime - answerA whole number greater than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself.
Whole Number - answer0 and all natural numbers (i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3 ...)
- Decimals, Fractions, and Negative #'s are NOT whole numbers.
Natural Numbers - answerPositive integers or counting numbers ... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ...
Greatest Common Factor - answer(GCF, aka.) the greatest number that is a factor of
two or more given numbers.
i.e. The GCF or 8 and 12 is 4
Factors:
8/1, 2, 4, 8
12/12, 3, 4, 6, 12
