RESEARCH QUESTION:
Overarching Research Question:
"In what way does accommodation and transport conditions affect the mental well-being and
academic success of students at The University of the Western-Cape (UWC)? This research
question is aimed at highlighting the correlation between students’ mental health, the ability to
perform academically, the living conditions that students are exposed to, and the varying degrees
to which students are able travel back and forth from campus with ease."
CONCEPTUALIZATION:
Accommodation Definition:
What type of housing is available to UWC students, this includes on-campus residence, private
accommodations, and those commuting from home.
Measurement: The satisfaction with the current accommodation, relation between
accommodation and well-being, differences between various accommodations
Transport Definition:
The various modes of transportation used by UWC students to travel to campus and back (e.g.,
cycling, walking, private and public transport).
Measurement: Amount of time spent traveling, accessibility to various transport options, cost of
transportation, the frequency of transport related issues
Well-being and Academic Success Definition:
Overall academic performance in unison with overall mental, emotional and physical health of
students.
Measurement: Sleeping patterns, attendance levels, stress reported by students
