1. Describe your personal experiences with learning fractions as a student. Discuss any

challenges or difficulties you encountered when first introduced to fractions. Explain how

your understanding evolved over time. (10)

Reflecting on my personal experiences with learning fractions as a student brings back

a mix of memories, some challenging and others triumphant. Initially, fractions seemed

confusing and abstract. I struggled with understanding how a number could be divided

into parts and still represent a whole. The concept of a numerator and denominator was

particularly challenging to grasp. For instance, the idea that 1/2 and 2/4 represented the

same quantity was perplexing.

One of the most significant challenges was visualizing fractions. When fractions were

first introduced, I found it difficult to comprehend their representation on a number line

or in geometric shapes like circles or rectangles. The exercises that required converting

improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa were also quite daunting. I often

mixed up the procedures and made errors in calculations.

My understanding of fractions began to evolve when I was introduced to more visual

and hands-on learning tools. Using fraction strips, pie charts, and real-life objects

helped immensely. These visual aids allowed me to see fractions as parts of a whole,

making the concept more concrete. For instance, dividing a pizza into slices and

understanding that 4/8 was the same as 1/2 made the idea much clearer.

, Another turning point was practicing operations with fractions—addition, subtraction,

multiplication, and division. Initially, adding and subtracting fractions with different

denominators was confusing. However, through persistent practice and the help of

visual aids, I began to understand the importance of finding a common denominator.

Multiplying and dividing fractions, while still challenging, became more manageable as I

memorized the rules and practiced regularly.

As I progressed in my studies, I encountered word problems involving fractions. These

were initially intimidating, but they ultimately helped solidify my understanding. Solving

real-world problems where fractions were applicable made the abstract concept more

tangible. For example, calculating the fraction of ingredients needed for a recipe or

determining the fraction of time spent on various activities helped reinforce my skills.

Over time, my understanding of fractions deepened through consistent practice and

application. I learned to appreciate the importance of fractions in various mathematical

contexts, such as ratios, proportions, and algebraic expressions. The initial challenges I

faced turned into a solid foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts.

In conclusion, my journey with learning fractions involved overcoming initial confusion

and difficulty through visual aids, hands-on practice, and real-world applications. These

strategies helped transform fractions from an abstract concept into a comprehensible

and essential part of mathematics.

2. Share your experiences and insights gained from your own learning journey. Reflect

on the challenges you typically face when learning fractions. (10)
