The Tricameral Parliament system was implemented in South Africa in 1983 as part of the apartheid regime's attempts to reform and modernize its political system while maintaining racial segregation and minority white rule. This system establis hed separate legislative chambers for whites, coloreds (mixed -race people), and Indians, but excluded the black majority, thereby entrenching racial divisions and discrimination. Primary Objectives of the Tricameral Parliament System 1. Perpetuate Minority Ru le: The main objective was to maintain white minority control while giving an illusion of political inclusivity. The system aimed to placate international criticism and internal dissent by appearing to provide political representation to non -white groups. 2. Divide and Rule : By creating separate chambers for different racial groups, the government sought to divide opposition to apartheid. The goal was to prevent a unified front among the oppressed racial groups. 3. Control and Contain Dissent : By co -opting colore ds and Indians into a political system, the apartheid government aimed to reduce unrest and opposition from these communities, isolating the black majority who were completely excluded from this process.
