[Company address] HSY3705 Assignment 1 Semester 2 2024 - DUE 10 August 2024 HSY3705 Assignme nt 1 Semester 2 2024 - DUE 10 August 2024 Critically discuss the impact of the Tricameral Parliament system on South African society during its implementation. What were the primary objectives, and how did it affect different racial groups? Use examples to support your analysis . The Tricameral Parliament system, implemented in South Africa in 1984, was a significant but controversial reform within the broader context of apartheid. It was established under the new constitution promulgated in 1983, intending to address criticis ms of the apartheid regime without fundamentally altering the racial hierarchy that underpinned it. Primary Objectives 1. Constitutional Reform and Deception : The primary objective of the Tricameral Parliament was to create a semblance of inclusivity and refo rm. By allowing limited political representation for Coloureds and Indians, the apartheid government sought to placate internal and external critics of its racial policies. It aimed to project an image of progressiveness and adaptiveness in the face of mounting pressure for change. 2. Division and Control : Another key objective was to further divide and rule by creating separate legislative bodies for whites, Coloureds, and Indians, thereby maintaining white supremacy while giving token representation to the o ther groups. This system was intended to fragment opposition and prevent a unified front against apartheid.
