Recent flooding in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), has caused significant damage and disruption,
impacting tourism and local infrastructure. The floods, which occurred in January 2024, resulted in the
deaths of several people and the displacement of many residents. Areas such as eThekwini, KwaDukuza,
and Ndwedwe were severely affected, with damage to roads, homes, and electrical infrastructure, leading
to widespread power outages and road closures(The Mail & Guardian, 2024).
The tourism industry in Durban has been particularly hard hit. Many popular tourist areas, including
uMhlanga and Durban South, faced severe flooding and landslides, causing extensive damage to hotels,
guesthouses, and other tourism-related businesses. The destruction of infrastructure has made it difficult
for tourists to access these areas, leading to a decline in visitor numbers and revenue (The Mail &
Guardian, 2024).
The floods have also highlighted the need for better urban planning and disaster management. The local
government has been criticized for inadequate preparation and response to the flooding, which has
exacerbated the damage and recovery efforts. As a result, there is a growing call for the implementation
of more resilient infrastructure and improved disaster response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of
future flooding events (The Mail & Guardian, 2024).
Against this background, answer the following questions:
a.
Strong local government support for tourism recovery
b.
Implementation of effective urban planning and disaster management policies
c.
Criticism of the local government's inadequate preparation and response
d.
High levels of international aid for disaster relief
Clear my choice
